Thumb Drives, aka USB flash drives

Don’t you just love thumb drives? Also called USB flash drives, they’re small, portable, and now hold lots of data.  Some of them  come in cute cases, such as tiny teddy bears or Star War statues. Great for gifts. Norma has her eye on one adorned with Swarovski crystals  (Amazon.com) and loves the ultra small “Tuff ‘n tiny” model from Verbatim; Tony likes the high capacity 256GB one from Kingston.

OK, they’re easy to lose if you’re not careful, but you can make them easy to find or carry along by attaching them to a cord, string or something more creative (think key ring, leather strips, and the like). Some thumb drives can be password protected or even encrypted or have options to password protect individual files to limit access “for your eyes only.” Victorinex and others have ones that use fingerprint protection (why don’t they all make it this easy?).

Those CDs, DVDs and the like take up too much space and too often end up in landfills. Our files are now backed up on thumb drives--and they all fit into a box in our desk or in our media safe. Convenient, save lots of space, AND reusable too.
